Maine Black Bear Cub
While at bear camp, the guides explained that bear cubs are taught to hibernate over two winters by the sow. If a first year bear cub is spotted without its mother, the right thing to do is what Dave did - Watch and see if the mother shows.
Sows do not leave their cubs unattended. If the mother does not show in due time, the cub is on its own. Unfortunately, as winter begins to set in and food sources disappear, the cub begins to slowly starve to death. The right thing to do is to take the cub to prevent such a fate.
Dave shot this cub after watching him for 45 minutes. |
